July 2024: Pre-planned chip seal (oil/stone) application this summer continues on several town roads. This is a preventative treatment to prevent potholes, large cracks and bumps, and general deterioration of the road. This treatment should last approximately eight years.
The Adams Road area was completed the week of July 8. The week of July 15, the Highway Department will be working in the Hatch Road area, followed by the Phillips Road area.
These areas are in the oil and stone application phases of the process, which includes:
- Crews repairing gutters, catch basins, drainage pipes, and existing asphalt.
- A diluted (pet-friendly) herbicide mixture being sprayed on weeds and grasses located between the road and gutters.
- Street sweeping prior to application.
- Oil and stone will be applied and can be driven on right away. Disruption should be minimal to traffic. Cars should be parked in the driveway during the application. The stone will continue to become more compact for 2-3 weeks**.
- 2-3 weeks after the application, the road will be swept to remove loose stone. Crews will try to sweep one or two additional times before the winter season**.
**The exact day of the initial application and/or subsequent sweeping cannot be provided as it is continually affected by weather, daily production variation, and site conditions.
